The on-going list of Unspoken Rules of Motherhood pertaining to the Birthday Parties. These are things I have learned, noticed or have been told. Some are serious, some are just for fun – you be the judge! Check back regularly to see what I’ve added.
#1: Thou shall RSVP – on time: if you’ve ever held a birthday party for your child, you know how important this is.
#2: Thou shall RSVP: there’s kids out there who have absolutely no one show up at their birthday party, not RSVPing because they think the others will show up. Do the parent a favour, RSVP whether you can make it or not.
#3: Thou shall not show up in pajamas: just don’t. Don’t take your kid to the birthday party in your pajamas, don’t pick them up in your pajamas and unless it’s a pajama party, make sure junior is dressed in day clothes too.
#4: Thou shall understand that gifts are overrated: don’t get me wrong, I know everyone loves tearing open a perfectly wrapped gift, but I’m over the buying. You never know what anyone else got or if the birthday kid already has that toy or if the birthday kid even NEEDS another toy. We make a nice homemade card (because we all know those expensive cards end up in the garbage) and stick about $20 in, which is how much I would have spent on a gift and wrapping anyway.
